At BlizzConline, I spoke with WoW principal game developer Jeremy Feasel about this mount, including how it came about the reason it's so distinctive and how it's connected to the broader lore of WoW.
World of Warcraft : Shadowlands: Chains of Domination
Blizzard announced a poll of players recently asking fans what they'd prefer to get from a new mount, allowing them to vote to determine what it would look like. The idea was to collaborate closely with the community in a new way to give players an increased sense of belonging to Azeroth in the World of Warcraft universe. The other choices in the survey included the giant book you can ride on, a kitty cat made out of jelly, a caterpillar, and a creepy spider.
The Wandering Ancient was the most loved choice, Feasel said. "By a wide margin, everywhere, riding a giant walking tree won," he said.
People who love The Lord of the Rings are probably familiar with huge walking trees with the Ents, but it's not just the Ents. Ancients are also an important aspect of the World of Warcraft lore and Night Elves specifically.
"There's the mythology of being able to ride in the top of a massive tall tree." She said in reference to the representation of giant walking trees in media like The Lord of the Rings. "But as well, Night Elves have this long and extensive history of their ancient protectors , and ... the lore goes back in time to World of Warcraft. I believe there's some of the player base that's always dreamed of riding one of those beasts. They finally achieved their goal."
