The biggest concern for any free-to-play game in particular

The biggest concern for any free-to-play game in particular, one that relies on loot, is how the game will be to be monetized D2R ladder items . On this front, Heng explained that purchases in Torchlight Infinite are broken down into two different categories. Features like more bag space, talent resets, and auto-looting functionality will be what Heng described as "pay-for-convenience." New heroes, in addition to various cosmetics, are also going to be available to purchase and are part of what Heng described as "pay-for-content."

Torchlight Infinite will not sell craft materials or equipment for cash, Heng said. Those materials will "strictly hard-to-find" to ensure a fair experience for everyone. Heng said the fact that Torchlight Infinite won't have any stamina or fitness meters which limit progress of players and stated that players will have the "freedom to start and end their grinding at their own discretion."

It's a tricky decision to make. Diablo Immortal, which Torchlight Infinite will probably be similar to, was critiqued at its debut for its pay-to win mechanics, even as it reportedly made greater than $50m during its first month. Since then players have complained about the way in which Diablo Immortal's MMO system penalizes solo players, with many having difficulty finding the additional players required to complete the dungeons or raids essential to development.

If asked what they've learned from the lessons XD Inc. has learned from Diablo Immortal's launch, Heng didn't mention the microtransactions that were a source of controversy, but instead said many problems with Diablo Immortal stemmed from the inability to control expectations of players.

"From our point of view, the populace was most unsatisfied about their expectations of how Diablo Immortal was presented as an ARPG game, but became an ARPG MMO," Heng said.

Heng said Diablo Immortal's advancement systems and build options are much smaller than Diablo due to this fact which may have misled players looking for a traditional Diablo experience cheap d2r items . "If the game didn't use this IP of Diablo its performance might have been vastly different from what we've seen," Heng said.
